Spending a day in St. Francisville, Louisiana, is like stepping into a real life postcard—where history, nature, and Southern charm blend seamlessly. Denis and I had the chance to take a few hours to explore this picturesque little town and thought it was not only adorable, but a very relaxing place to visit. We stopped by the Myrtles Plantation, Afton Villa Gardens, and the vibrant downtown. Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable day.

Morning: The Myrtles Plantation
Our day began at the renowned Myrtles Plantation, often dubbed one of America’s most haunted homes. Nestled among ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss, the plantation is surprisingly close to the main road, so don’t drive too quickly or you’ll miss the turn. But once you drive onto the property, you’ll find this 18-century estate, a hotel, cabins for rent, and the Elta Coffee Shop. While there are a couple different tour options for varying fees, it’s completely free to walk around the grounds. The tranquil grounds are absolutely beautiful so you’ll have plenty of places to take a quick picture.

Midday: Strolling Through Afton Villa Gardens
A short drive led us to the enchanting Afton Villa Gardens. Established in the mid-19th century, these gardens are all that remain of the once-grand Afton Villa estate, which was destroyed in a fire in 1963. Spanning over 20 acres, the gardens boast manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and the ruins of the original mansion. There’s also one of the most beautiful barns I’ve ever seen at the back of the property. It was covered in flowers during our visit so you know I had to take a bunch of pictures. The gardens are open during the spring and fall seasons and they offer a tranquil retreat for visitors.

Afternoon: Exploring Downtown St. Francisville
In the afternoon, we ventured into downtown St. Francisville, an area brimming with history and local charm. The streets are lined with preserved 19th-century buildings, housing an array of antique shops, cafes, and boutique stays such as the St. Francisville Inn. You’ll even see the cutest little gazebo, which totally reminded me of Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls. While parking is limited, the downtown area is perfect if you’re looking for a safe and relaxing place to take an afternoon stroll.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this charming Louisiana town promises a day well spent.
