5 Lessons My Mom Taught Me

5 Lessons My Mom Taught Me

Happy Mother’s Day everybody! I hope that you’re all having a wonderful day. Today’s post is very special because it’s dedicated to my mom, Alice Ree. Her name is actually Alice Marie but my uncle always called her “Alice Ree” so I do too.

Well, regardless of what you call her, my mom is my hero because she’s strong, smart, beautiful, funny, and loyal to her family. Growing up she taught me a lot of lessons – and she’s still teaching me things to this day. But there were 5 lessons that really stood out to me above the rest.

These 5 lessons helped to shape me into the person I am today and I’m forever grateful that the Lord blessed me with a mom like mine. In the words of the Band Perry, We’d walk on grass that’s greener, And our cares would all be freer, If the world had a mother like mine.”

So let’s jump into the first lesson . . .

5. Treat Others the Way You Want to be Treated

My mother has this unique ability to treat everybody – no matter who you are or where you come from – exactly the same. From as far back as I can remember she always told me to practice the “Golden Rule” – do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. And she taught me this lesson by leading by example. No matter who you are or where you’re from – if you meet my mom, she’s going to greet you with a genuine smile.

4. If Other People Can Do It, So Can You

Growing up, any time I felt insecure or like I couldn’t handle a new season in life, Mom would always encourage me by saying, “If other people can do it, so can you.” These words always gave me the strength to try something new, because they reminded me that anything is possible if I put my mind to it.

3. Do Your Best You Can Every Day

My mom is a really hard worker and she instilled her work ethic into me. I watched her get up and go to work every day for many years and she believed that whatever you did, you needed to try and do your best. She always says, “Just do your best and the good Lord will take care of the rest.”

2. Family is Everything

When I was a little girl in school, my mom attended every field trip, class holiday party, football game, talent show, and teacher conference. She was always there and because of that, I knew I could always trust her to be there for me. My mother was a very present kind of parent and that’s something I will be forever grateful for. The love and loyalty she has for her family has always inspired me and continues to inspire me to be loyal too.

1. Always Put God First

My mom always made sure I went to church. From a toddler on up, she would wake me every Sunday morning and take me every Wednesday night to church. And yes, there were times I didn’t want to go, but now that I’m older I’m so thankful to her for having God in my life. She taught me how to pray and how to lean on the Lord in times of trouble and pain. And because of her, I know that Jesus loves me and that I can talk to Him any time I like.

There are a million more things I could say about my mom but even if I was able to write them all down they would never do her justice. She’s an amazing woman, mother, and friend and I hope I can be half the mom she is someday.

So now that you know the 5 lessons my mom taught me, what lessons did your mom teach you? Were there any values she instilled in you? Let me know in the comments. And I hope you all have a beautiful Mother’s Day.

Verse of the Day: Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. – Proverbs 31:25 – 26

There’s no one as special as your mom.
