Once Upon a Broken Heart
Honestly, I wasn’t sure whether or not I would like this series when I picked it up, but after reading the first book, I was hooked. The story follows a girl named Evangeline Fox who’s convinced she’s in love with a boy named Luc. But her world is turned upside down when she learns that Luc is engaged to be married to her stepsister, Marisol. So, in an attempt to stop the wedding, she makes a deal with a Fate named Jacks, e.i., the Prince of Hearts, that she’ll kiss three random strangers in exchange for stopping the wedding. Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong. Making a deal with the Fates has always been a tricky business and Evangeline is going to find out just how tricky.

The Ballad of Never After
We pick up with Evangeline and Jacks in book two as they face a brand new curse. This time, the curse isn’t regarding love, it’s regarding murder. But Evangeline isn’t sure who she can trust, aside from the traitorous Prince of Hearts. Forced to team up, Evangeline and Jacks dive deeper into the secrets of the royal family of the Magnificent North and have to face old friends and new foes as well as a magic that plays with their hearts and heads. Can they break the curse before it’s too late?

A Curse for True Love
The last book follows Evangeline as she navigates being in a seemingly cursed marriage to Apollo, the prince of the North, and having forgotten her past and her love for Jacks. Fighting a curse of his own, Jacks does everything he can to restore Evangeline’s memories, but with Apollo by her side, Jacks’s plans are proving to be more challenging than he anticipated. Although Evangeline can’t remember him, she finds herself being drawn to Jacks. Can their love break their curses and make the Magnificent North safe again? You’ll just have to read and find out.

If a whimsical story is what your heart has been yearning for, this is the perfect series for you. Set in the same world as Stephanie Garber’s Caraval series, the setting is dripping in aesthetic images like cursed apples, enchanted mirrors, magical castles, and stunning ball gowns. This is a slow burn love story that offers yearning, misunderstandings, and tension that you’ll find yourself coming back to again and again. All in all, the series is dramatic, enchanting, and a tad mysterious, making it the ideal book series to dive into during the Valentine’s Day season.

Verse of the Day: But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful just as your Father also is merciful. – Luke 6:35-36
