Christmas Cardboard Gingerbread Houses

Let me tell you a secret: I stink at making gingerbread houses. It’s sad but true. While some people can make the most beautiful gingerbread houses with all of the icing, gumdrops, and sprinkles, mine just never turn out right. And as much as I love the idea of traditional gingerbread houses, I’ve found an equally festive (and much less messy) alternative: Christmas cardboard gingerbread houses.

This is a perfect and easy craft you can do with your children, your friends, or even by yourself on a cold, December night. Cardboard gingerbread houses give you all the charm of the classic treat without worrying about crumbling cookies or sticky fingers. Plus, it helps you do something constructive with all the extra cardboard you might have coming in your house thanks to packages.

What You’ll Need

  • Cardboard
  • White Chalk Pen
  • Scissors (or a box cutter)
  • Hand-held hole punch
  • Ribbon

Feel free to display your houses on their own or punching holes in the top of them and stringing some ribbon through them to create a garland.

Making cardboard gingerbread houses is about slowing down and enjoying time together during the busiest season of the year. Sometimes the sweetest traditions don’t come from the kitchen—they come from a cardboard box, a little imagination, and a whole lot of holiday cheer.
